|
Exotic conifers are firs that we are experimenting with for Christmas tree and Ornamental
purposes. They are called Exotic because they are not native to this area or do not grow
naturally here. Weir Tree Farms is working with other growers in the area and all over the
nation, doing research, experimenting, and testing many different species of trees to find
ideal characteristics. Currently we have as many as 15 different Exotic species growing in
experimental plots. Each species has to be grown on different sites and micro-climates to
determine maximum growth rates and survivability due to soil types and nutrient availability.
Each species must be pruned individually to obtain the correct method for that particular
tree. With planting rotations (time between planting and harvest) averaging 8-12 yrs.,it is a
long, expensive process to find the right species to grow in the right place. Exchanging
information and ideas between growers helps shorten this process and cut down on mistakes. |

| Below are some examples of Exotics we are currently growing | |
| Korean Fir: Native to Korea and known for it's "white flash" as you can see in the picture. This tree has a strong scent and good needle retention. We feel it has the characteristics to become and excellent Christmas tree choice. |
